What is Shopify A/B Testing?

Shopify A/B testing is the science of growing Shopify Plus stores through the strategic use of experimentation to: 

  • Improve the conversion rates of existing landing pages, category pages, product pages and ad sets. 
  • Set up entirely new experiences for customers (like a new retention program or subscription system) without committing resources to hard code the build. This gives you the freedom to try multiple solutions, fail fast, and find what innovations work for your business. 
  • Shed light on what tactics actually drive more orders and revenue, and the possibility of seeing a positive impact on the store when scaled.

What is the conversion rate for Shopify?

There aren’t any averages for Conversion rates for Shopify across channels. But individually, the conversion rate for email is 4.29%, the conversion rate on search is 3.04%, the conversion rate for direct traffic is 2.93%, and the conversion rate for social media is 1.81%. (**Source: Shopify)

What is the impact of iOS 14 on Shopify Plus stores?

iOS 14 forced Shopify Plus store owners to re-think targeting and PPC traffic. It has been hailed as a step in the right direction where customer privacy is concerned. In the past Apple allowed third party apps to track customer behavior across digital channels. People could opt out of this tracking, but they had to take action and remove themselves. 

As it goes… Not many iPhone and Apple users did this. 

With iOS 14, as soon as the upgrades hit, users were given the choice to opt out of tracking upfront. 

There are 3 key ways in which this change impacted Shopify store owners: 

  1. Pixel based conversion data is both inaccurate and delayed. Before iOS rolled out, store owners would see a 10% to 20% discrepancy between numbers on ad platforms like Facebook and their own analytics suites. Post the roll out, Facebook numbers have plummeted. Stores have adjusted by directly working with Conversion APIs. 
  1. Campaign budget optimization (CBO) has suffered. CBO allows stores to manage their ad spend more efficiently by allowing the platform to dynamically allocate budget based on real time performance data. With tracking no longer as reliable as it was in the past, CBO has lost its effectiveness, calling for manual adjustments needed to ongoing campaigns. 
  1. Retargeting audiences have shrunk. This one is a no-brainer. Since more people are choosing to not be tracked, fewer visitors are being bucketed in what has traditionally been the most profitable segment for store owners – returning traffic. 

Even though it may seem like more traffic is the solution to these issues, that is far from the truth. It is like filling water in a leaky bucket. The holes that have been introduced by iOS 14 will continue to render traffic segments less valuable.
