What is Deductive Reasoning?
Deductive reasoning is the process of using logic and data to reach a specific conclusion from a general hypothesis. In A/B testing, it’s how you determine whether the observed data provides enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis—that there’s no difference between your control and variant.
It’s central to statistical inference. You define the rules (hypothesis, significance level), run the test, and then assess if the result follows logically from the data collected. When done right, deductive reasoning turns your raw results into a trustworthy decision.
How Deductive Reasoning Works in Experimentation
Every A/B test has a built-in logic chain:
- You define a general hypothesis, often that your change will impact a metric.
- You collect specific evidence by running an experiment.
- You analyze the results and decide if they contradict the null hypothesis.
If the data is improbable under the assumption that the null hypothesis is true, you reject it. That’s a deductive conclusion: from general rule + specific observation → result.
Most experimentation platforms use this process automatically, calculating p-values and confidence intervals behind the scenes. But knowing how it works helps you interpret the outputs with more confidence and more skepticism.
